Jaguar is set to release an extra special edition XK to mark the quality car manufacturer's 75 years in the motoring industry.

To whet car buyers appetites, Car Dealer Magazine has revealed that this supercar Jag is no pussycat, offering 530 bhp from a 5.0 litre supercharged engine. With 655Nm of torque, the car has no problems reaching 60 mph in just over four seconds with a top speed of 174 mph. With stiffer dampners and a lower ride height the '75' is reportedly one of the best Jaguar's ever made.

On the outside, the XKR 75's looks fail to disappoint, with a sporty bodykit, massive exhaust and 20 inch alloys. According to Auto Express, owners will be able to choose an individual graphics pack and stratus paint job if they really want to stand out.

Priced at around £85,000, only 75 models will be produced, meaning Jaguar enthusiasts are already looking to sign the order book in July. If you're lucky, you may spot the exclusive car at high-end events or under pristine Chelsea pads.

Managing director of Jaguar, Mike O'Driscoll, commented on the sumptuous model, saying: ''This is a fitting way to celebrate the sporting credentials of the XK marque in the 75th year of the Jaguar name.''

At 2010 Goodwood Festival of Speed Jaguar will unveil the new XKR 75 super coupe, a special edition which marks the company’s 75th anniversary. This model is limited to 75 units, obviously, and features a unique Stratus Grey finish, Red brake callipers and 20-inch gloss Vortex rims, while you can also order some graphics for it just like the picture above.

Jaguar XKR 75 also benefits from enhanced performance. The 5.0 liter supercharged V8 of the car is tweaked to develop 530PS and 655Nm, which reduces its 0-60 time to 4.4 seconds (standard XKR 4.6). The top speed is still limited but to 174 mph or 280 km/h, so no complaints here!

It also gets a semi-active sports exhaust system for an even nicer soundtrack.

To cope with the extra power, XKR75 comes with a re-tuned chassis featuring revised suspension and an aero kit for the body consisting of a front splitter, side sills extensions, a rear diffuser and larger rear spoiler. Inside the cabin new items exclusive to the 75 include Charcoal with ivory stitch, piano black finish to facia and centre console and a Jet suedecloth headlining.

Mike O’Driscoll, managing director, Jaguar Cars, said: “The XKR 75 will provide owners with exclusivity, excitement and a hint of Jaguar’s great heritage. This is a fitting way to celebrate the sporting credentials of the XK marque in the 75^th year of the Jaguar name,” he continued.

Tata Motors’ gave their dealership to their Jaguar Land Rover line of cars to Inline4Motors, Hyderabad. Inline4Motors is the fourth company to their dealership, being the fourth to have right for a Jaguar Land Rover outlet. Tata Motors already has two outlets in Delhi and one in Mumbai.

Rohit Suri of Tata Motors said over 12,000 luxury cars are sold a year which are part of Jaguar Land Rover. Tata Motors’ rivals BMW and Mercedes Benz have over 12 outlets in the country and Suri of Tata Motors said Jaguar Land Rover will soon open outlets in other metros in the country to compete with BMW and the Benz.

Jaguar Land Rover is planning to set up in China also. Tata Motors believes the move will help Jaguar Land Rover sell faster in China which is the world’s fastest growing car market. "Clearly China is a very important and growing market for Jaguar Land Rover. It is currently the third biggest individual market in terms of volume for Land Rover and the fourth biggest for Jaguar," a Jaguar Land Rover spokesperson said. "Material cost is a significant challenge and JLR has previously said that over the next few years it will grow the amount of materials and components it purchases from lower cost countries," he added.

Jaguar Land Rover sold over 2,132 units in China during the first quarter of sales last year. This year the company sold 5,786 units in the same period, i. e. the first quarter between January and March.

Jaguar may have just been sold, but it's plowing ahead with a new flagship sedan. With brawny coupe-like styling, more power and a futuristic interior, this thoroughly modern XJ could be the crown jewel for Jaguar's new owner.

Jaguar keeps hemorrhaging red ink, so does Ford Motor Company, in part because Jaguar has been such a money pit since Ford bought the famed British automaker some 20 years ago. With Ford now desperate for cash, it's just finished the process of selling Jaguar as well as Land Rover after offloading a third British property, Aston Martin, in early 2007. Fortunately for Ford, several suitors lined up, including the new owner Tata Motors of India, part of the big Tata industrial combine. But that's another story.

Meantime, Jaguar sales keep sliding, especially in the U.S. The X-Type compact premium sedan has been a major flop here, which is why it's being dropped from the local lineup. Demand for the aged S-Type is down to a trickle, but that midrange sedan goes away in mid-2008 to make room for the new XF. The sporty XK coupes and convertibles are doing okay, but the flagship XJ sedans have been a hard sell even after their wholesale redesign just four years ago.

Critics contend the latest XJs aren't moving because they look so much like the previous-generation cars. But Jaguar realized some time ago that it was trapped by its own visual past and began searching for a new design tradition, a 21st-century take on "Jaguarness." The XF is the first fruit of that effort. The 2010 Jaguar XJ will be the second.

For a long time, worrying about Jaguar was the only sensible thing to do. While it was never exactly clear if the marque had (ever) achieved profitability, we enthusiasts were only too happy to give them the benefit of the doubt. After all, the English automaker serially gifted us with watershed designs. Sublime mechanical creatures like the E- and D-Type sports cars, as well as the curvacious Mark II and original XJ. How could we not be totally and utterly smitten? Yet somehow, the once proud automaker eventually found itself adrift in mediocrity, turning out maligned and slow-selling products with an unpleasant odor of unreliability as the money began to run dry. When the then Ford-owned brand launched headlong into its "democratization of luxury" strategy that resulted in the lamentable 2001 X-Type and serious talk of an SUV, well, we couldn't help but grow gravely concerned.

The XFR, too, induced the same sort of awe. Few cars I test turn women’s heads as much as men’s, but Jaguar’s designers have a knack for making beautiful baubles that almost no woman can ignore. I’d love to think it was the recent tan I’ve acquired of course but young, fashionable, well-heeled ladies both fair and dark sent lustful glances toward the car—and just toward the car. One woman in a supermarket parking lot walked right up to the XFR, addressing it, not me, with a huge grin on her face, and peppered away with rapid-fire questions. Sated with knowledge, she just walked away, looked back at the car as if to confirm a mental catalog of details, and belatedly remembered there had been a human being she’d been talking to and said, “oh, sorry, thanks….”

Fast as Bloody Hell

If only I could’ve given a ride to every ogler of the Jag the company might find itself a huge new client list. True, maybe all those ladies (and men too) wouldn’t ever tap into the 510 horsepower V-8 under the bulging hood of the XFR, but that also might not matter, because this four-door is quite civilized unless you don’t want it to be.

I certainly didn’t; with 40 more horsepower than the XF Supercharged (and $15k more tallied to the sticker price) and an engine that nails peak torque (461 pound-feet) at a a barely twisting 2,500 rpm, the stats box alone should tell you what this car can do. That torque curve feels nearly flat as well, and that huge grunt equals more than a fast run (4.7 seconds, claimed) to 60mph. From 70 mph, passing a logging truck and three SUVs on a two-lane rural highway, the XFR downshifted its six-speed gearbox to third, held it to the nearly 7,000 rpm redline, and proceeded to upshift into fourth and so on. Looking down finally at the speedo I was rocketing at twice the legal limit. This could get dangerously addictive.

The police-spec Jaguar XF was first announced by Jaguar last May. The car is based on the XF Diesel S Jaguar, with a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter engine that makes 273 horsepower and has a 0-60-mph time of 5.9 seconds. Plus, of course, there's a light bar on the roof and a distinctive electronic setup.

The choice to buy seven Jaguar XFs as patrol vehicles for the Central Motorway Police Group in this West Midlands region of England should turn heads and keep speeders alert. The Jags join a fleet that the police group describes as including vehicles such as Range Rovers, Toyota Land Cruisers, Volvo T5s, Vauxhall Omegas and a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter command center vehicle.

For all those penny-pinching Jaguar buyers out there, the automaker has announced it's offering free standard maintenance on all 2011 models and extended warranties.

The new Jaguar Platinum Coverage has a five-year, 50,000-mile limited warranty, and complimentary maintenance while the warranty is valid.

I clearly remember the moment nearly one year ago when I first laid eyes on Jaguar's new XJ sedan, and felt as though I'd been impaled on some gorgeous aluminum tusk. What a fantastic looking automobile. On any aesthetic scale you'd care to calibrate—modernity, chic, formal grace, raw carnality—this thing simply obliterates the competition, just grinds their bones. Fee-fi-fo-fum, I smell the blood of Bavarians.

From that moment until this week, when I finally slid behind the wheel of the company's flagship sedan, I sort of held my breath. Recent Jaguars—the XK coupe and XF sedan—have been very decent cars but always felt as if they missed greatness by a few millimeters. The 2011 XJ couldn't possibly, as a machine, live up to all this sculptured sin.

It does. Actually, it's a monster. Hugely civilized, desperately fast, drenched in high-tech amenities and executed with the kind of spirit and joie de vivre than makes the competitive German products look positively Amish, the new Jag is now the presumptive favorite in the full-size premium sedan category. Put another way: If you buy anything else you need a dog and a white cane.

Of course, Jaguar—a relatively small firm and a veritable fountain of red ink, now owned by the Indian conglomerate Tata—does not have the engineering resources of Audi, BMW or Mercedes-Benz. BMW probably has 100 engineers working on coin holders and glove-box dampers. The Jag doesn't offer the tomorrow tech of the Lexus LS600h hybrid. The XJ's lusty 5.0-liter V8s—naturally aspirated (385 horsepower) or supercharged (470 hp or 510 hp)—are not quite as highly evolved as BMW's twin-turbo powerplants, nor does the car offer as many forward gears as the eight-speed 7-series (the Jag has only six gears). I suppose in a five-way geek-off comparing the cars' navigation and multimedia consoles, the Jag's might not be quite as intuitive and refined.

Jaguar Launches Free Maintenance Program for 2011

Jaguar does not want consumers avoiding its cars because of high maintenance costs, and in order to dispel that (completely fair) notion, it will introduce “Jaguar Platinum Coverage.”

The new program offers a five-year/50,000-mile new-vehicle warranty, free scheduled maintenance and roadside assistance. It will also include free replacement of parts for basic wear and tear, including oil changes, filters, brake pads, brake discs, brake fluids and wiper blade inserts. That's a big difference from Jaguar’s last free maintenance program where owners were asked to pay for replacement parts. Jaguar killed the program in 2006, presumably because customers didn’t like paying for new brake pads and wiper blades.

The new program will start with the 2011 XJ sedan, which is slated to hit dealerships in May. The XF sedan and XK coupe will follow suit when the 2011 models debut in June, according to the automaker.

PERFORMANCE cars don’t come much cooler than the Jaguar XK.

Distinguished rather than flash, expensive but not extortionate, it’s a grand tourer of the highest order, and being totally honest the big cat has never looked better.

The coupe has the poise of a panther, and when you floor the throttle the roar of something altogether more ferocious fills the air.

The latest generation of a model range that’s been around since 1948 sees the previous 4.2-litre engine replaced by a new AJ-V8 5.0-litre unit that brings significant improvements in both power and torque without compromising fuel economy and emissions.

In the case of the 385bhp 2+2 coupe that means 26 per cent more punch and 23 per cent better pulling power.

And while the maximum speed remains under electronic control at 155mph, the XK’s lightweight aluminium body combined with the power and torque gains sees the coupe’s 0-60mph acceleration time lowered from 5.9 to 5.2 seconds.

An average fuel return of 25.2mpg – and you need to be very lucky to record that figure – is also appreciably better than close competitor the Mercedes-Benz SL500.

Rare 1961 Jaguar E-Type could sell for £135,000

Prices for E-Type Jaguars are continuing to appreciate in the collectible automobiles markets. And examples currently up for sale include this 1961 Jaguar E-Type 3.8 Series 1 Roadster.

Eightieth of just 91 right hand drive examples produced in early July, 1961, and one of the first to be exported, this Series 1 3.8 Roadster returned to the UK from Cyprus in 1996 and has been fully restored.

Restoration works included a complete professional rebuild of the entire car, faithful to the original factory specifications. The works were carried out over 12 years by its dedicated London owner, himself a professional trim expert.

According to Mike O’Driscoll, the Supersport version of the long-awaited new Jaguar XJ large luxury saloon has an ability denied to any other car on earth. “It’s fantastic,” he says, fixing me with a messianic gaze. “It can get out of its own way really, really quickly.”

I retire to a quiet, darkened room to think that one over and ponder whether Jaguar’s MD has been watching too much Dr Who. And then, a few hours later, I drive the car and come to understand why he is thumping the tub about the company’s new flagship quite so enthusiastically.

It is hard to overstate the importance of the XJ to Jaguar as the company accelerates away from its long reliance on an admittedly proud past, toward a future which O’Driscoll and his design chief Ian Callum are determined will see it once again recognised as a design and technology leader.

It had travelled a long way down that road even before the arrival of the XJ, which will be in showrooms soon. The S-type, conceived under Ford ownership and with styling harking back to Jaguars of the 1960s, was replaced several years ago by Callum’s ultra-modern XF mid-sized executive saloon, which many now rate above its BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class rivals. The unsuccessful X-Type “small” Jaguar – based on Ford’s mundane Mondeo underpinnings – has been dropped, in line with Jaguar’s determination to elevate itself ever further upmarket. The latest Callum-designed XK sports coupés and convertibles will race at Le Mans this year, and have won respect for quality and performance worldwide. Denials of plans for a smaller, lighter, outright sports car – the real stuff of Jaguar legend – carry all the conviction of MPs’ rationalisations of their expenses.

The new model is impressive at first sight and if the outside part view reminds us of XF models, the back view comes with a completely original style for the British automaker.

The aluminum body helps the car to be lighter by about 331 pounds compared to its main competitors, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are those that have benefited from this advantage. Low weight and together with over 50% of recyclable materials help the economy of 6614 pounds of CO2 for each vehicle.

The technical part comes with Jaguar Adaptive Dynamics and an air suspension system, Active Differential Control and a range of engines consisting of a V6 3.0-liter diesel engine, a V8 engine with 385 HP, and two versions of its supercharged engine of 470 HP and 510 HP. Salesman Tony Martin has been selling prestige cars for the best part of a quarter of a century, writes motoring editor Peter Carroll.

“Porsches, Lamborghinis, Bentleys, Aston Martins – I’ve sold them all in my time,” he says.

“But I have never been as excited about a new car as I am about this one…”

Tony, senior sales executive at Stratstone’s dealership in Wolverhampton, is talking about the impending arrival of the new Jaguar XJ.

In a few weeks’ time this car will take its place as the new flagship of the Big Cat brand – and Tony and his colleagues cannot wait to start selling it.

With prices starting at around £53,000, Stratstone staff have already taken a dozen orders from customers who have yet to drive the vehicle.

With deliveries for the new 2010 Jaguar XJ set to start shortly, prices for the new luxo-cat have been released. They start at $72,500 (including destination) for the base normally aspirated 5.0-liter XJ and go up from there.

In the realm of luxury barges, a “basic” car can hardly be considered basic. But what Jaguar calls a base XJ undercuts all of its competition. Audi’s (current) A8 starts roughly $2000 higher and is the closest in price to the Jag. BMW’s short wheelbase V-8 powered 750i starts at $83,000 (including destination) and Mercedes-Benz doesn’t even offer a short wheel-base S-Class in the States. A similarly powered long-wheelbase S-Class will set you back just over $92,000.

Although the new XJ is priced significantly less than most of its competition, it includes all of the amenities usually found on über-sedans. The standard XJ comes with 16-way power heated and cooled front seats, dual-zone climate control, a 600-watt premium sound system, navigation, an adaptive suspension, and even a panoramic glass roof. And of course the interior simply oozes British luxury.

Spy shots and concept photos published in British publication Car (which I came across via Autopia) reveal a Jaguar XJ that has been redesigned to ensure that Jaguar ultimately meets the same fate as Volvo: obscurity and unpopularity. Abandoning the traditional makeup WHICH MADE THEM LEGENDARY – ahem, excuse me – Jaguar’s design chief Ian Callum appears to have engineered yet another interchangeably-styled luxury sedan. 2011 XJ test mules that were spotted on the test track were heavily disguised under the body work of the current model XJ saloon’s, but I’m not fooled. According to sources, the Jaguar XJ’s new design direction is a heavy crossbreeding of the Aston Martin Rapide and the Bentley Continental GT, which several auto enthusaists have heralded as a much-needed revision of the Jaguar XJ’s “outdated style.”

Sigh.

Ok. Let me break this down for you: when Ford bought Volvo in 1999 they performed the same kind of overhaul, abandoning the “turbo brick” styling. The result was a retooled Volvo that looked like little more than a high-end Ford Taurus. Now, thanks to that brilliant maneuver, Volvo’s popularity as a brand has been “put in the back on the discount rack, like another can of beans,” (to quote Billy Joel). The only motorists that are still enthusiastic about Volvo are the loyjala fanatiker like myself who remain true to the original Volvo line, manufactured from 1927 to 1999. As a matter of fact, if you ever crack open the pages of Rolling Magazine (the official publication of the Volvo Club Of America), you’ll notice a distinct lack of anything influenced by Ford.

Like Volvo, Jaguar’s design isn’t merely an odd, “outdated” aesthetic, it’s a tradition-rich design upon which Jaguar’s legacy has been built. If it’s drastically altered to resemble yet another Bentley look-alike, you will effectively destroy the only traditional thread the Jaguar XJ had left to cling to. Granted, the entire Jaguar line has suffered a fall from popularity, but tampering with its only remaining prize-winning formula isn’t going to change that. I say to Jaguar: leave the XJ alone and focus instead on fine-tuning the two models that are already trying to embolden the mix, the Jaguar XK and the XF. Otherwise, you’ll find yourself sitting next to Volvo on the discount shelf. I hope you like beans.

Look no farther than the current super-sleek Jaguar XK sports coupe and the forthcoming new XJ luxury saloon, though that name is debatable because Jag’s new flagship XJ looks more like a GT car.

It was intentional because Callum wanted to get right away from the classical Jaguar look and move the brand into the 21st century.

First impressions would seem to indicate that he has achieved his intention.

The new XJ, due mid next year and priced from $193,800 for the twin turbo 3.0-litre V6, is a stunner from any angle and will undoubtedly spawn styling trends that will be used by other makers.

Scanning the long, svelte lines leaves you in no doubt about the potency of this large saloon car. It starts with the imposing, aggressive looking front with a deep grille, steeply raked screen, glass roof that seems to meld into the top of the screen, large doors with small window openings, fast back roof that ends at the tail of the car and those “Bentley” cats claw tail lights - wow.

And under the bonnet is an arsenal of Jag’s latest power plants ranging from the 3.0-litre twin-turbo diesel V6 that’s good for a whopping 600Nm of torque and three versions of Jaguar’s 5.0-litre direct injection petrol V8, one naturally aspirated and two supercharged. The top engine has 375kW/625Nm output and can still return as good as 12.1 litres/100km fuel economy. It is capable of pushing the XJ Supersport model from 0-100km/h in a scant 4.9 seconds - not bad for a car that weighs in at 1915kg and has just about every luxury feature known to man.

If you were among the few Jaguar/Land Rover fans that wondered why Ford would sell off two brands they’d just invested millions in, congratulations, you can now tell your friend’s “I told you so.”

Having bled cash for a while prior to the sale, both companies were given new facilities and new models right before their disownment, and it would appear that investment from Ford has finally paid off as Tata has recently announced that both companies have turned a profit. Yes, you read that right, a profit. Thanks to an increase of 23% in total sales over the last quarter, Jaguar/Land Rover posted a profit of almost $5 million.

While nothing to write home about (that’ll only buy you around 50 XK’s), the profit demonstrates exactly how far the two firms have come from their darker days. Now producing vehicles that are easily the equal of competitors once thought out of reach, it’s good to finally see the buying public expressing their confidence in the two historic firms.

There are still plenty of people who get that warm fuzzy feeling when they see an old Jag.

The brand is entwined in our national psyche with its raffish wood ’n’ leather, pipe smoking, sports jacket wearing, Britishness. Of course, all that means nothing whatsoever to luxury car buyers in the US, Europe and beyond, buyers whose purchase decisions make or break Jaguar as a credible global car maker. The famous marque was hamstrung by its own history for too long but today there’s a newfound confidence and a forward-looking agenda. Nothing illustrates this more dramatically than the latest XJ.

The XK sports coupe and the XF executive saloon were breakthrough cars for Jaguar. They married all that heritage to a more overtly modern approach. The XJ shows Jaguar spreading its wings further with a luxury saloon to challenge the sector’s leading lights. It’s a firm break from the big Jag tradition that was originated in 1968 by the original XJ. Through at least five generations of Jaguar’s flagship, the styling evolved at an arthritic snail’s pace. It reached the point where the last model, one of the most advanced luxury cars on sale at the time of its launch, looked ostensibly the same as the rusting relics that could be picked up for peanuts at any second hand car dealership. Jaguar wasn’t communicating its dynamism and relevance, but it is now.

Like its predecessor, the XJ uses all-aluminium construction which sees it tip the scales substantially lighter than steel rivals like the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes S-Class. As long as buyers don’t go wild on the options list, it should even come in weighing less than the substantially smaller Jaguar XF. This leads to major advantages in the performance, handling and efficiency departments where an important part of the luxury car battle is fought. The engines have been seen before in the XF, so we know that they’re largely outstanding. There are normally aspirated and supercharged versions of the Jaguar 5.0-litre V8, with 380bhp and 464bhp respectively. Plus Jaguar is also offering an XJ Supersport model with the supercharged engine upgraded to 503bhp. The diesel will inevitably be popular and it’s a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 that yields 271bhp, with a massive 600Nm of torque thanks to its variable geometry turbos.

The fully independent suspension is similar to that in the XF but drivers have the option of choosing standard, Dynamic or Winter settings via the JaguarDrive rotary knob that takes the place of a conventional gear lever. These modes adjust the suspension, throttle response, gearshift speeds, stability control settings and the active differential to produce the desired results. The gearbox itself is an electronically-controlled six-speed auto complete with wheel-mounted paddle shifters which sends drive to the rear wheels on all XJ models. Jaguar is intent on this XJ being seen as a real driver’s car.

The sinewy lines of the XJ only serve to emphasise its sporting intent. The front end borrows heavily from the XF, the sharply contoured bonnet and the wire mesh grille that juts forward from the plain of the headlights giving it real presence. The car is available in standard or long wheelbase forms, with the longer car gaining 125mm and somehow managing to look even sleeker in profile. The real drama is at the rear, however, where Jaguar has gone for an elegant but bold treatment. The C-pillars are blacked out to look like an extension of the rear screen and the tail lights arch up around the rear haunches into the line of the boot lid. The fins of light within the clusters are meant to resemble a jaguar’s claws.

Very quickly after revealing a whole range of images and specification for the XFR we now have the same for the XK and the supercharged XKR. Jaguar's 2+2 grand tourer has been completely revised and now features the new generation of powerful yet economical engines.

The 5.0-litre V8 is the choice of power for the XK. In its naturally aspirated guise the all-aluminium engine makes 385PS (283kW) and 380lb ft (515Nm) of torque. For the XKR a supercharger has been installed and it helps the car push out 510PS (380kW) and 461lb ft (625Nm) of torque. The XK places 5.2 seconds on the board for its 0 - 60mph time (0 - 100km/h is 5.5 seconds). The XKR runs 0 - 60mph in 4.6 seconds and its 0 - 100km/h time is 4.8 seconds. As you see the car you will instantly notice the large fenders which point out to wider tires on 20″ rims used on this high performance sedan. Last night, at the Saatchi Gallery in Chelsea, London, the 2010 Jaguar XJ was officially revealed, during an event hosted by Jay Leno. And oh boy, it looks amazing. Following the acclaimed XF, Jaguar’s new flagship’s design is a mixture of sporty and elegance, with a very aggressive front part and a very stylish rear part. Jaguar Cars Managing Director, Mike O’Driscoll, commented: “These are truly exciting times for us at Jaguar. The new XJ is truly beautiful, exhilarating to drive, and with its bold, enlightened approach to design, it meets the challenges of our fast-changing world. It re-imagines the ultimate sporting luxury car.”

Beside an innovative panoramic roof which enhances the feeling of light and space inside, the new XJ’s interior features a choice of colors, veneers and leathers which the British carmaker says it has never been seen before in a Jaguar. Customers will be able to choose between five trim levels, Luxury, Premium Luxury, Portfolio, Supercharged and top-of-the-line Supersport, which includes leather roof-lining, , semi-aniline leather seats and veneers with laser inlays. Interior highlights include 1200W Bowers&Wilkins audio system, 12.3 inch high-definition Virtual Instruments and Dual-View technology 8-inch touchscreen that can project DVD movies or TV programmes to the passenger while the driver views vehicle info or the satellite navigation.

Under the hood, the 2010 Jaguar XJ will come with the company’s ultra-efficient Gen III petrol and diesel engines, including the 3.0-litre V6 diesel, the 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8, the 5.0-litre supercharged V8 and a 470 horsepower version of the latter one. According to Jaguar, the diesel-powered XJ returns combined economy figures of 40.1 mpg and CO2 emissions of 184g/km.

New Jaguar XJ Teaser

Jaguar has started the countdown to the launch of the all new aluminium XJ model, by releasing this teaser shot of the car - see above. Jaguar is expected to bring us a few more pictures from obscure angles before the car is revealed properly in London on the 9th July.

From the picture, we can see that the XJ will abandon many of its current 60's styling cues and go for a look much closer to the incredibly successful XF model. It should have a much wider grille than the current XF and the headlights will be much sleeker units more akin to those seen on the C-XF concept.

The roofline will be a flowing curvy affair, with the option of a full length panoramic glass sunroof letting plenty of light into what will be a very advanced interior, again taking XF styling and stretching it further, and the rear c-pillars look to be very narrow, with the majority of the metal hidden behind blacked out glass. The XJ may even be a lift back rather than a saloon car - we will have to wait and see!

Jaguar is running their own teaser website which you can keep up to date with the new XJ, and your first chance to sit in the car will be at the Frankfurt motorshow in September.

More rumours are circulating on the net regarding Jaguar possibly launching a station wagon (or Estate as the UK like to call it) version of the fantastic XF model.

It runs along the lines that the only other station wagon version of a Jaguar ever launched - the X-Type, was more of a lifestyle car rather than a true load lugger, and it's expected that the XF would follow the same thinking, and have similar space to say a BMW 5 series rather than the more spacious Audi A6 Avant.

Rumours suggest Jaguar could show this car at the Frankfurt motor show in Germany in September, but with the new Jaguar XJ so close to launch, it may be doubtful that Jaguar would show 2 new products at the same show, so the XF Station Wagon may have to wait until next year. With sales of big SUV's dropping in the US, this has prompted many buyers back into station wagon models, which may be what has prompted Jaguar to look again at this model.

Jaguar developing Mechanical KERS system

Engineering transmission firm Torotrak announced that is has been working exclusively with Jaguar to develop a mechanical energy recovery system. Unlike several current regenerative braking systems which store the energy developed when the car slows down as electrical energy, this system uses a small infinitely variable transmission, coupled with a flywheel to store the energy.

When the Jaguar brakes, the kinetic energy is sent through the IVT and spins the flywheel at speeds up to 64,000 revs per minute. This energy is stored and when the car accelerates again it is released back into the drivetrain, giving an added boost of power. As the energy is not wasted, this makes the Jaguar more fuel efficient.

Tototrak and JLR have not said when the system will see an application in production cars, but trial are underway integrating the system into the current crop of petrol and diesel models, and it could be launched in the new Jaguar XJ which we are expecting to see towards the end of 2009.

First Drive: 2009 Jaguar XF Supercharged

Slide into the cockpit, and immediately your eyes are drawn to the keyless start/stop button on the center console: It's beating a rhythmic red, as if the XF is coming alive. Press it, and the supercharged 4.2-liter V-8 twists into a muted whir, concealed air vents in the dash glide open, an innovative rotary shift knob -- the so-called JaguarDrive Selector -- rises out of the transmission tunnel. You've just witnessed "the Jaguar handshake," the first of several servings of pizzazz that differentiate this striking new four-door from such classmates as the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and the BMW 5 Series.

"You may recognize the grille as being inspired by the original 1968 Jag XJ," says Ian Callum, director of Jaguar design. Then his voice grows almost stern. "But the XF is not a retro car." Quite the opposite, in fact. "We need to attract buyers in their 30s and 40s," admits Mike O'Driscoll, Jaguar's managing director. "The XF is an overtly expressive automobile; it's designed to make you smile. And its success is critical to the future of Jaguar Cars."

Make no styling judgments until you've seen the XF in person. Distinctive as it may look in photos, in the metal the XF radiates a modernity and sexiness that simply don't translate to the printed page. The current XJ8 -- admittedly a considerably larger and more traditional sedan -- appears positively baroque in comparison.

The design flair continues inside. Watch out, Audi: The XF will have your celebrated cockpit stylists grumbling with professional jealousy and admiration. A low, nearly seamless dash sweeps from door to door in a smooth, even plane. Flawless twin-needle stitching finishes the edges. A band of textured aluminum frames the air vents, central seven-inch touchscreen (standard on all XFs), and the console's audio and HVAC controls. Also evident is more hand-rubbed tree than in any Jag in decades; buyers will have a choice of American Walnut, Burl Walnut, or Rich Oak. Like its namesake cat, at night this Jaguar shines: Phosphor blue lighting illuminates the instruments and the edges of the controls (much like the Motorola Razr cell phone, which inspired the look). Prepare to make the jump to hyperspace: You're at the glowing helm of your own Millennium Falcon.

Inside the center console lies an available adapter that allows you to operate your iPod or iPhone (music only) via the central touchscreen. The overhead cabin lights activate not with a button but with "JaguarSense" tap -- as does the glovebox (simply press a small target icon on the dash; Jaguar says the shape was inspired by The Who's "Quadrophenia" album cover). While the lights respond perfectly, the glovebox touch-target requires a carefully pointed finger to work (engineers say such precision was necessary to prevent accidental openings). Options include a DVD-based navigation system, a rear parking camera, radar-based blind-spot monitors, and a 440-watt, 13-speaker Bowers and Wilkins audio system with Dolby surround sound (all the aforementioned are standard on the XF Supercharged).

Although other markets will also offer a twin-turbo 2.7-liter diesel V-6 and a 3.0-liter gas six, the U.S. will get only the premium V-8s: a 4.2-liter naturally aspirated version making 300 horsepower and a supercharged-and-intercooled variant good for 420 horses. Both mate to a ZF six-speed automatic controlled by that unique rotary shift knob. A fully "drive by wire" system-no mechanical connections between shifter and transmission-the JaguarDrive Selector (the company should've called it something more fabulous, like "Twirl-N-Go") is intuitive, easy to use, and frees up console space for those oh-so-important Big Gulps. Simply rotate the knob to Drive, and you're off. An additional Sport setting quickens the transmission's responsiveness. Or simply pull one of the wheel-mounted shift paddles and you're changing gears manually (holding the upshift paddle for two seconds sends the system back to standard Drive). Particularly in full manual mode, shifts are brilliantly quick-10 percent faster, Jaguar says, than in the XK coupe.

As for the reliability of an electronically controlled shift knob that has to perform its rising and falling act multiple times every day, know this: Jaguar ran the rotary Selector through 68,000 test cycles and also subjected it to the "two-liter Coke test," dumping more than a Big Gulp's worth of Atlanta's world-famous brew onto the console and then ensuring that the Selector continued to function (professional driver on closed course: do not attempt).

The XF's variable-ratio power steering is magnificent, rich with feedback, arcing through its orbit smoothly, and transmitting a linear build-up of forces in corners. The ride impresses, too; the XF Supercharged gets Jaguar's CATS adaptive-damping system, which neatly balances body control with suspension plushness. Rough-road impacts are well absorbed, aided by a body structure (made of 25 grades of steel plus aluminum and magnesium) that Jaguar claims is the stiffest in the class. A composite undertray and a secondary bulkhead contribute to a cabin that transmits almost no wind noise and only a hint of road rumble.

Kick the throttle hard and the supercharged V-8 kicks back with plenty of thrust; Jaguar claims a 0-to-60-mph time of just 5.1 seconds (the normally aspirated XF is said to make the same run in 6.2 seconds). Not bad for a sedan that checks in at more than two tons. Top speed is limited to 155 mph. Perhaps most important, the V-8 makes sounds that will have your own heart flickering like that fancy starter button.

While the XF offers nearly 18 cubic feet of trunk space (and the ability to fold down the rear seats for even more cargo room), its rear compartment is not its strong suit. With a six-footer comfortably situated in the driver's seat, a similarly sized adult sitting behind will be squeezed (things are better on the passenger side, where the front-seater can more easily scoot up a bit). True, the XF's rear bench is considerably more accommodating than the all-but-unuseable rear buckets in the two-door XK, but overall the XF feels more like a roomy four-door coupe than a true five-passenger sedan.

When the XF goes on sale in March, Jaguar will offer three versions: normally aspirated Luxury (base price: $49,975), normally aspirated Premium Luxury ($55,975, with such added standard features as 19-inch alloy wheels-versus the base 18s-heated front seats, premium soft-grain leather, and navigation), and the topline XF Supercharged ($62,975), which comes standard with 20-inch alloys and every feature but an optional heated steering wheel and radar-guided adaptive cruise control. Jaguar expects the Supercharged edition to account for about 15 percent of the XF mix, but given the blown car's content and 120 additional ponies, it's likely the actual percentage will be far higher.

For sure, the XF has the performance and panache to stand out in the premium midsize segment-and attract those younger buyers Jaguar is so keen on. We'll need a comparison test to confirm how the XF stands up against its impressive competition, but a car with a heart is going to be tough to beat.

Jaguar Cars tonight officially unveiled the all-new XJ car at the Saatchi Gallery in Chelsea, London.

Hosted by Jay Leno, one of the world's best-known chat show hosts and a renowned car enthusiast, the launch of the new Jaguar flagship was attended by an invited audience that included public figures, business leaders, celebrities and media.

The X-type saloon is available with 2.0- or 2.2-litre diesel engines. The smaller version has 128bhp to the 2.2's 153bhp and also falls 23lb ft short for pulling muscle, but it doesn't feel much slower. The 2.0 is available only with a five-speed manual gearbox and prefers to be coaxed rather than worked hard, but it produces plenty of punch. The 2.2 diesel can be specified with an automatic gearbox.
